Fraser island is a huge sand island at 30 minutes by ferry from the Queensland coast. The roads are all sand roads either inland or by the beach so a 4x4 is required to drive in the island. So we rented an old 4x4 car to spend 3 days camping in the island.

Even though the beaches on the east coast of the island are very nice, it is not safe to swim on them due to the strong courrents and the sharks. But there are a lot of very nice lakes and creeks where the swim on spring waters makes the island very attractive. As all the island is sand, the lakes sides are cover by sand making amazing beaches in the middle of the island.

Driving on the inland roads is very rough and it was very cool to drive the 4x4 in these conditions. We had to cross rivers, climb very slip sand areas and even fight for not getting stuck in the sand. Around the roads or better say paths, all was covered by rain forest.

The motorway of the island is the beach. On the beach you can drive at 80 depending on the type of sand; wet, very dry or medium. You still have to be careful when driving on the beach, sea water can get too close easily. We had to calculate the tides to make sure that we could cross certain areas where the beach gets very small on high tide.

A wreck by the beach |
Due to the difficult driving conditions the nature is still amazing even it is a very touristic island. The lakes are full of amazing sand beaches, even by the dunnes. The forest is very dense, close to the rain forests that you can find in tropical areas. The wildlife is also quite impresive, including the dingos that are like wild dogs, the birds and of course the snakes and other animals.
